About ICAS – THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF THE AERONAUTICAL SCIENCES
“Covering the World of Aeronautics”
The objectives of International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS) are to provide opportunities for the exchange of knowledge, discussion of aeronautical research, technology, and related issues and to promote international awareness, cooperation and collaboration.
Established in 1957, ICAS supports the work of about 30 professional Member Societies from around the world and, through its Associate Membership, engages with aerospace companies, national laboratories and educational institutions. ICAS holds a biennial Congress covering all aspects of aeronautical science and technology and their application to both military and civil aviation. Held in September of even-numbered years in an aeronautically relevant venue, the Congress attracts more than 700 delegates with a programme of over 600 papers and invited lectures. All papers are included in an electronic publication available at the Congress. In addition, the ICAS electronic archive, containing many thousand documents, is freely available to the world-wide aeronautics community.
Engineers, scientists, technologists, economists and managers who attend the Congress have the opportunity to:
- Present their work to an informed, truly global audience
- Hear the latest developments from internationally recognized experts
- Exchange information and opinions with colleagues from around the world
- Develop collaborative relationships
- Build long lasting friendships and networks with colleagues in other countries and cultures, and
- See and understand implications

About the hosting society FTF – THE SWEDISH SOCIETY FOR AERONAUTICS & ASTRONAUTICS
FTF (FlygTekniska Föreningen) was founded in 1933 in Stockholm. In 1968 there was a merger with the Swedish Interplanetary Society (Svenska Interplanetariska Sällskapet) into what constitutes the present society. In consequence, the name in Swedish was later changed into Flyg- och rymdtekniska Föreningen, but the abbreviation FTF was retained.
The purpose of the society is to promote and stimulate the interest in the technology of aeronautics and astronautics in Sweden. Today FTF has about 1000 members, mostly aerospace engineers. Besides the main branch in Stockholm, FTF has local branches in five other cities, Gothenburg, Kiruna, Linköping, Trollhättan, and Malmö where the leading aerospace industries are situated.
FTF frequently arranges seminars and lectures in aerospace topics. The evening lectures take place in each of the local branches so that the members are informed about the current aerospace news. Traditionally, we also run our semi-national congresses every third year, since 1992, the latest was in October 2019 in Stockholm with 300+ participants. These congresses have become the most important forum for aero-space engineers and researchers in Sweden.
FTF annually is presenting awards for outstanding achievements in aerospace technology in Sweden. The Thulin medal, in gold or silver, is normally given to about two or three persons every year since 1944. The FTF news Bulletin “Bevingat” is released four to six times a year and distributed to the members.

FTF and ICAS – a long-standing relation
FTF has been involved with ICAS since its foundation in 1957 and has arranged two successful ICAS congresses in Stockholm in 1962 and 1990. FTF hosted the ICAS Secretariat between 2003 and 2010 and the ICAS Programme Committee meeting 2011, in Stockholm and Linköping. Over the years there has been a strong participation from Sweden in ICAS Congresses. FTF representatives have over many years played active roles in ICAS affairs through participation in the Executive and Programme Committees.
About the ICAS 2022 co-host Innovair – THE SWEDISH STRATEGIC INNOVATION PROGRAMME FOR AERONAUTICS
Innovair is Sweden’s national strategic innovation programme for aeronautics. The aim is to coordinate and support stakeholders from industry, universities, institutes, associations and government agencies who are active in the aeronautics sector. The main objective is to promote favorable conditions for a strong aeronautics industry in Sweden and to strengthen this sector through increased collaboration, research and information dissemination.
Swedish aeronautics is internationally recognized and contributes beside exports also with high capacity for innovation, high-tech jobs, community services, and technology transfer to other sectors. Another main objective is to contribute to Swedish defence and security capabilities. International competition is increasing and strategic initiatives in selected areas is necessary to preserve and strengthen the conditions for the aeronautics sector in Sweden.
Innovair has both short- and long-term goals for the environment, growth, innovation, and a strengthened international position. To achieve these goals, a joint research and innovation agenda, NRIA Flyg, has been developed, with updates every three or four years. The agenda formulates a strategy and also prioritises which technologies require focused efforts to create a strong international position.
